Sam Houston State University is an NCAA Division I school, with baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, rifle, soccer, and track & field for men and basketball, cross-country, golf, rifle, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball for women. The team nickname is the Bearkats. (The varsity teams were known as “The Normals” until 1923.) The College of Agriculture also has a rodeo club, which competes in individual rodeos. Bearkat teams have won nine national titles and 52 conference crowns. The team competes within the Southland Conference.

Sam Houston State competes in Division I of the NCAA and offers intercollegiate competition in baseball, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball. The Bearkats compete in the Southland Conference. The University’s most recent national championship was captured by the softball team in 1993 at the National Invitational Tournament. The baseball, football, and men’s golf and basketball teams have also claimed national titles at one point in their history. The baseball, football, and men’s golf and basketball teams each have nine or more conference championships to their name. The softball, volleyball, and women’s golf and tennis teams have also claimed conference championships at one point.
